I have been using Energizer Lithium AA batteries for over 20 years. Most recently, I have used them extensively in fifteen Nest Protect Smoke Alarms and four Schlage Sense Smart Deadbolts at our home. These batteries used to last 3-4 years in the smoke alarms and 6-12 months in my smart locks. But now they only last 8-10 months in the smoke alarms and 2-12 weeks in my smart locks (average about 4-6 weeks).
I have given up on Energizer Ultimate Lithium AA. I was using four of them in a chip activated cat flap because we wanted reliability while out of the house, but have has several instances of the sudden death of one cell phenomenon.
One battery of the failing set generally shows very low voltage (~0.5V) while the others are still above 1.5V. The remaining batteries somehow die shortly as well when I attempt to re-use them.
When ordering online, always be sure to select the shipped and sold by [Retailer] option to ensure that you receive the best consumer experience possible.
If you want to buy in bulk you want to look at specific brandings. Duracel Procell and GP Supers. I think Procell have some lithium sku's, but they are going to set you back 3-4x the cost of Alkaline so you should consider if the marginally better performance is worth the price for your hardware.
The only reason I’ve ever heard against the use of lithium batteries in smoke detectors is their flat energy curve. Alkaline batteries give a warning well in advance of the battery dying, whereas you may miss the chirp if you’re at work with the steep power loss at the end of life for a lithium.
This is a good deal, sometimes rechargeable aren't the option. For example small emergency phones often specifically request these lithium ultimate batteries for long term storage.
