Massage Oils & Candles: your questions, answered

choosingHow do I choose a massage oil or candle?
Start with the base and the scent. Lighter oils like sweet almond or grapeseed absorb faster; richer blends give longer, more sensual slip. Massage candles melt into warm oil at a low temperature, so they double as mood lighting. Pick unscented or lightly scented if fragrance sensitises your skin, and always patch-test first.
comparisonMassage oil vs. massage candle — what's the difference?
A massage candle is simply massage oil in solid form — you light it, let a small pool of wax melt, then pour the warm oil onto skin. Bottled oils skip the flame and suit longer, full-body sessions. Candles add ambience and gentle warmth; oils give you more product and easier control. Neither is condom-safe.
safetyAre massage oils and candles safe on skin?
Most are, but oils and fragrances are the two things to check. Patch-test a small amount on your inner arm first, especially with essential-oil blends or anything scented. Oil-based products weaken latex condoms and aren't meant for internal use, so keep them to external massage. With candles, test the melted pool on the back of your hand before pouring.
careHow do I use a massage candle without burning anyone?
Let the candle burn until a shallow pool of oil forms, usually 15–20 minutes, then blow it out and test the temperature on your own skin first. These candles are formulated to melt at a low, skin-safe warmth, but pour from a little height so it cools slightly. Keep the wick trimmed and never leave it unattended.
valueHow much should I spend on a massage oil?
A mid-range bottle is plenty to start — you don't need the most expensive blend to get a silky, long-lasting glide. Spend a little more on a candle if ambience matters, since you're paying for the vessel and scent too. The Coyscore highlights which oils reviewers rate for slip and scent, so you buy on feedback, not price.
deliveryIs delivery discreet, and can I return a massage oil?
Always discreet — plain, unbranded NZ packaging and a low-key billing descriptor, with free shipping over $150. We don't offer change-of-mind returns or exchanges, whether or not it's been opened. If anything arrives leaking, cracked or faulty, get in touch and we'll always make it right.

Buying guide

How to choose a massage oil or candle

A great massage is about slip, scent and warmth — not the priciest bottle. Here's what the Coyscore weighs across massage oils and candles, and what to check yourself.

Coy buying-guide card — “Pick your base and slip”

1. Pick your base and slip

The carrier oil sets how a massage feels. Light oils like grapeseed and sweet almond absorb quickly for a less greasy finish; richer blends with jojoba or coconut give longer, more luxurious slip. If skin sensitivity is a concern, start with a fragrance-free base.

  • Light oils absorb fast and feel less greasy
  • Richer blends glide longer for slow, sensual sessions
  • Fragrance-free suits sensitive or reactive skin

2. Candle or bottle?

Massage candles melt into a warm, pourable oil and set the mood with soft light and scent — lovely for slow foreplay. Bottled oils give you more product and finer control for full-body work. Many couples keep one of each for different nights.

  • Candles: warmth, ambience and scent in one
  • Bottles: more product, easier control, no flame
  • The Coyscore weights slip, scent and skin-feel from real reviews
Coy buying-guide card — “Mind the condom rule”

3. Mind the condom rule

Oil-based products — including every massage oil and candle here — weaken latex condoms and aren't designed for internal use. Keep them to external massage, and switch to a body-safe water-based lube if you're moving on to penetrative play with latex.

  • Oil weakens latex condoms — external use only
  • Patch-test scented blends before a full session
  • Pair with a water-based lube for penetrative play
