I don't like pain though. I'm not looking for discomfort, only pressure. Is there rope that's soft enough not to irritate my skin or should I just get a long length of silk?
Pure silk is not a good place to start--it can be difficult to untie and the knots have a habit of getting tighter over time.
For practicalities, very few ropes sold as "silk" are actually made of anything like silk. They're almost always a polyplastic material.
Bamboo silk is not suitable for suspension. The stretch means that the knots and frictions can tighten and be almost impossible to undo.
The difference is that silk is quite a bit more slippery and will hold knots quite a bit tighter... It is definitely the softest though.
