Oil-Based Lube: your questions, answered

choosingHow do I choose an oil-based lube?
Match it to external, condom-free play and check the oils used. Natural single oils like coconut are simple and food-safe on skin; blended massage oils add slip and scent. Because oil isn't latex-safe, only choose it when you're not relying on latex condoms, and keep it for external use.
comparisonOil vs. water vs. silicone lube?
Oil lasts a long time and doubles as a massage glide, but it degrades latex condoms and can be harder to wash off. Water-based is the safe all-rounder for condoms and toys. Silicone gives oil-like longevity while staying condom-safe. For barrier-free, external play, oil shines; otherwise pick silicone or water-based.
safetyAre oil-based lubes safe to use?
Oil-based lube is not safe with latex condoms — it weakens the latex and can cause them to break, so it's best kept to external, barrier-free play. Internally, oils can linger and may raise the risk of irritation or infection for some. For massage and external touch, natural oils are lovely.
careHow do I use and clean oil-based lube?
A little spreads a long way and lasts, making it ideal for slow massage and external play. It can stain sheets and clothing, so lay down a towel. Oil doesn't rinse with water alone — use warm water and a gentle soap to wash it off skin afterwards.
valueHow much should I spend on oil-based lube?
You don't need much — oil is rich and long-lasting, so a small bottle goes a long way and lasts. Choose a clean, well-reviewed natural oil or massage blend rather than the cheapest option, since purity matters on skin. The Coyscore highlights the oils reviewers rate for feel and scent.
deliveryIs delivery discreet, and can I return lube?
Always discreet — plain, unbranded NZ packaging and a low-key billing descriptor, with free shipping over $150. We don't offer change-of-mind returns or exchanges, whether or not it's been opened. If a bottle arrives faulty, damaged or leaking, we'll always make it right.

Buying guide

How to choose an oil-based lube

Oil-based lube is rich, sensual and long-lasting — but it comes with one big rule around condoms. Here's what the Coyscore weighs, and what to check.

Coy buying-guide card — “The latex rule”

1. The latex rule

The single most important thing to know: oil-based lube degrades latex, so it must never be used with latex condoms or latex barriers, which can break as a result. If you're relying on latex for protection, reach for water-based or silicone lube instead and save oil for barrier-free play.

  • Never use oil-based lube with latex condoms
  • Choose silicone or water-based when condoms matter
  • Best kept to external, barrier-free play
Coy buying-guide card — “Rich, long-lasting glide”

2. Rich, long-lasting glide

Oil sits on the skin and lasts far longer than water-based, without drying out, which makes it a natural fit for slow, sensual massage as well as external touch. Simple natural oils like coconut feel clean and cushioning; blended massage oils add scent and extra slip for full-body play.

  • Long-lasting and doesn't dry out
  • Doubles as a sensual massage glide
  • Natural single oils keep it simple and clean
Coy buying-guide card — “Clean-up and skin”

3. Clean-up and skin

Because oil repels water, it needs warm water and gentle soap to wash off, and it can stain sheets and clothing — so a towel is your friend. Many people keep oil-based lube for external and massage use only, since oils can linger internally; scan the ingredients if your skin is reactive.

  • Wash off with warm water and gentle soap
  • Can stain fabric, so protect your bedding
  • Best for external and massage use
